Instructors and Accompanists

Leila Chiacchia, Instructor - Junior Program

In the spring of 2003 Leila completed a Master of Music degree in collaborative piano at the University of Western Ontario.     Prior to that, she completed a Bachelor degree with distinction at the University of Calgary, majoring in performance and secondary education.  She was on faculty with the Mount Royal Conservatory Academy program, an accompanist with Amici Strings, an Assistant Conductor and accompanist with the Savridi Singer’s Women’s Choir, as well as a freelance accompanist and piano teacher. She has collaborated in performances across Canada and in Europe. Leila has enjoyed working with students and professionals of all ages and stages.    Most of her time is currently is spent with her two sons, Benjamin and Oliver!

Patricia Clattenburg, Instructor - Junior Program

Patricia earned her Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree from the University of King’s College, winning the Royal Canadian College of Organists Bach Prize in her graduating year.  Patricia’s diverse professional experience includes teaching music and directing award winning choirs across Canada. Prior to teaching music at Webber Academy she taught for Edmonton Public Schoolswhere she helped create a Performance Standards Document for Elementary MusicEducation. Patricia has attended international workshops and seminarsincluding special studies in choral conducting at the Royal School of Church Music in London, England as well as Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NewJersey. Patricia is committed to nurturing a love for music, as well as strong musicianship skills in children of all ages.

Lesley Hadford, Instructor - Junior Program

Lesley holds a Bachelor of Music degree with Distinction and a Bachelor of Education with a specialization in early childhood education from the University of Calgary. Lesley also holds a graduate diploma in fine arts from the University of Calgary’s Summer Kodály Institute. She is an experienced Ragazze chorister and gifted soprano soloist. Lesley is also an elementary school music specialist and early childhood teacher with the Calgary Board of Education. She has previously taught Prima, Bella and Dolce classes and will continue teaching Prima and Bella classes during her seventh year as an instructor in the Junior Program.

Maegan Hudson, Instructor – Junior Program 

Maegan graduated from Southern Virginia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and has musical training in violin, piano and voice in addition to an extensive background in dance.  She recently completed Kodaly certification at Intermuse Academy in Provo, Utah and also received Kodaly training at Holy Names University in Oakland, California. In addition to teaching with the Calgary Girls Choir, Maegan will begin working this year as an elementary school music specialist. In her fourth season with the Choir, Maegan is teaching the Southwest Prima class and is helping to coordinate the junior program instructors.

Wanda Le, Instructor - Junior Program 

Wanda Le received a Bachelor of Music with Distinction and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. During her studies, her love of children and music led her to focus on Kodály Pedagogy and to specialize in elementary music education. She has also completed the graduate program at the Summer Kodály Institute at the University of Calgary and holds a graduate diploma in Fine Arts. In addition to the Calgary Girl’s Choir, Wanda’s work in her school as an elementary music specialist has met high praise as her choirs have won numerous awards at both local and provincial music festivals.

Shannon Maynes, Instructor – Junior Program 

Shannon is a graduate from The Glenn Gould School of Music of The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Ontario, where she studied in the studio of Eraine Schwing-Braun and attained a Performance Diploma and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Following her undergraduate degree she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a focus in Arts-Based Learning from York University. In addition to working with CGC, Ms. Maynes works as a music specialist with Calgary Board of Education teaching kindergarten through grade six. As a former chorister and vocal student of Elaine Quilichini, Shannon is thrilled to be working and singing with the Calgary Girls Choir.

Karla Smith, Instructor – Accompanist - Junior Program

Karla holds bachelors degrees in Music and Education from the University of Calgary.  She has directed many award-winning ensembles, from elementary school aged children all the way up to adult choirs.  Her love of choral directing has led her to the Calgary Girls Choir and she is excited to be a part of it.  Karla also works as an elementary music specialist for the Calgary Board of Education.

Andrea Wettstein, Instructor - Junior Program 

Andrea holds a Masterof Music in Composition, and Bachelor of Music with distinction in theory andcomposition, from the University of Western Ontario.  As a composer,Andrea truly enjoys writing for the voice.  Her Masters’ Thesis was achamber opera for two tenors, baritone and chamber orchestra entitled “ThreeMen in a Tub”.  Andrea began singing in the Calgary Girls Choir at the age of ten, and is thrilled to be part of CGC again.

Lauren Pettigrew, Vocal Coach

Lauren has been singing in choirs since the age of 2 and became a member of CGC as a Viva chorister when she moved to Calgary in 2000. She is currently a member of the senior CGC ensemble Brava and is working towards her Bachelor of Nursing at Mount Royal University. Lauren is an accomplished vocalist and pianist and has received awards from the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival and NATS (National Association of Singing Teachers) Calgary. She is excited to be working with Dolce SW as their vocal coach this year. 

Gwen Yearwood, Vocal coach

Gwen has been singing with the Calgary Girls Choir for the past 14 years and continues to sing as a member of the senior Brava CGC ensemble. Gwen has always loved to sing but studying voice with Elaine Quilichini set her on her current path of studying and performing music. Gwen has been busy this past spring & summer singing at the Debut Gala Concert of the Calgary Concert Opera Company and at Opera on the Avalon, a summer opera program in St. John’s Newfoundland. This fall she will enter her second year in the music performance program at Mount Royal University this fall and looks forward to auditions in the new year as she pursues a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance.  Gwen began working for the choir as a Rehearsal Assistant for the Junior Program 5 years ago and was thrilled 2 years ago to begin vocal coaching for the Dolce program. 

Edward Choi, Senior Program Accompanist 

Edward Choi is a graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music in piano and clarinet performance. He now resides in Calgary and teaches at his private studio. Edward is in his seventh season with the Calgary Girls Choir, presently as the senior accompanist for the Viva, Ragazze and Allegra choirs.

Colin Redekop, Junior Program Accompanist

A native of Winnipeg, Colin moved to Calgary in 2007, following several years of musical activity in both the United States and Canada.  He serves as the  music director of Grace Presbyterian Church, and recently received the Master of Music degree from the University of Calgary, where he studied organ performance with Neil Cockburn.  Colin, in his fourth season with the choir, is the primary Junior Program accompanist.
