Junior Music Program
The Junior Program provides our youngest singers with a firm foundation of basic music skills and music literacy to prepare them for further study. The Kodály-based program is for children three to nine years of age (to grade 4), offered in a small class size that encourages a personal educational relationship. In a playful atmosphere, the singers acquire the ability to hear and think music.
Artistic Director Elaine Quilichini designed the Junior Program based on her many successful years as a teacher and professional instructor of teachers in the Kodály method at the University of Calgary and numerous seminars and workshops.
The Kodaly philosophy of music education aims to instill a love and joy for music in students while guiding them to develop music literacy and experience great music. That joy and personal independence will lead singers to have a lifelong love of singing and the confidence to pursue it in future situations. “Teach a man to fish and he will never be hungry” is an expression we all understand. I believe we might very well say, “teach a child to read music and they will always make music.” All 3 levels of the CGC junior music program are based on the Kodaly philosophy and a commitment to providing an enriched musical experience based on the pursuit of excellence.
Anima
(New program offered starting September 2011)
The Calgary Girls Choir introduces “Anima,” a program for 3 year-olds accompanied by a parent or guardian. This unique program, based in Kodaly, will provide an environment rich with song, dance, rhyme, and games. Zoltan Kodaly believed that every child has the right and ability to have high quality music as a part of their childhood. In Anima, musical concepts will be taught in a fun and energetic setting at a pace that keeps children engaged. Parents are encouraged to participate and will be given weekly material to continue the learning at home. We hope to provide this special age group with a fun-filled class to nurture their love of music, build connections between parent and child through music, and enjoy the creative process that comes naturally to three year-olds.

Prima
Prima (First), for ages four - five years, is a Kodály based music education program. Through traditional children’s folk songs, art songs, nursery rhymes and games, the children build a repertoire of playful songs and activities to be shared together. This repertoire forms the basis for the teaching of musical concepts. The girls work on developing in tune singing, responding musically to music as they sing, play and dance.

Bella
Bella (Beautiful), for girls in grades 1- 2, continues to develop and extend the musical development of the girls. They continue to focus on in tune singing, movement and musical literacy. The artistic and musical response to the songs they sing is developed further and the girls develop an increased awareness of musical elements in their repertoire. Play and physical response to the music continues to be an important aspect of each class.
Bella performs at the Junior fall and spring recitals, the Calgary Girls Choir’s Festive Concert and at the Junior Showcase & Fundraiser. Bella singers also share their music with their families during the season.

Dolce
Dolce (Sweetly) is for girls in grades 3- 4. In Dolce, there is an increased emphasis on the choral aspect of the training and the artistic refinement of the performances. Dolce continues with a Kodály-based approach and choristers focus more deeply on the development of in tune singing, inner hearing, musical literacy and vocal technique. Dolce choristers become very familiar with rhythm reading and solfa. Solfa is an approach to teaching sight singing that uses the movable do-re-me syllables to develop the inner ear and which enables the singers to become independent readers of music.
Dolce performs at the Junior fall and spring recitals, the Calgary Girls Choir Festive Concert, and the Junior Showcase & Fundraiser. The singers also share their music frequently with their families during the season.
